Mood boards are nothing new. What once was a cork board on your wall, is now a digital tell all. A compilation of your wants, desires, and internal compass. My favorite aspect of a mood board is that it can give you complete direction. You don't have to say anything. You don't need to think too hard about it. It's a visual tell-all of where you want to go.
I had a friend have a New Years Day party once, and she had everyone create vision (or mood) boards. It was the classic set up. Magazines, scissors, poster board, and glue. There were no rules. It wasn't a board of what we wanted our career to be. It wasn't a board full of people we wished we looked like. Just a visual board of images and slogans that inspired us.
Years later I worked with a woman for the branding of a business I started. The starting point was for me to create a Pinterest board with any and all images that spoke to the idea of this brand. I did it. I somewhat struggled, but I created this board with a wide range of images. She came back to me a week later with 9 images from that board that made sense to the theme of this business and she had a general color scheme. She built my brand from a mood board!
We can all do that! Our own personal brand and style can be nailed down through a mood board. When I work with styling clients that's my starting point. I discuss what they want, I compile images, and I nail down their "theme."
